Focus – WORKING IN THE PROJECT:
Certain Not-For-Profit Organisations (NFPs) face a number of special difficulties such as very limited budgets and an action- oriented, rapid response culture to respective incidents in the outside world. Therefore, the attitudes that emerge what projects success means include among others doing what’s possible within organisational constraints and the preservation of the quality of personal relationships. These attitudes often go along with a very flexible approach to targets and objectives, and grudging compliance with the implemented project management processes.
Thus, there is a risk to a training initiative that is focussed primarily on compliance with a standard method or with delivery on time and within budget that the initiative may not receive the expected type of support, neither from those in governance positions nor from those in project teams.
We have been working together with international NFPs in the field of project management since the early 1990s. Therefore, our training and project management approach is tailor-made to the needs of NFP-cultures and, in addition, to the respective organisation we work with. In our understanding competence arises from doing, e.g. understanding why a schedule is critical to effective controlling: During the first two days of the training we work on a case study and apply the learning on the participants’ project by developing a status report and, if necessary, do a replanning or define corrective actions. In addition, we use a simulation game and video analysis.
By doing so we not only focus on the tools to be used during project monitoring and control but also have an eye on mission critical approaches during the execution, workshop facilitation processes and group dynamics as well as communication and leadership issues.
